Abstract
Objective: To explore the specificity and sensitivity of clinical and
intraoperative findings in comparison with histopathology of specimens in
cases diagnosed as acute appendicitis and under going appendicectomy
Materials and Methods: This retrospective cross sectional observational
study was based on a review of the histopathological reports of
appendicectomy specimens submitted for histopathology examination in
Holy Family Hospital, Rawalpindi from May 2006 to April 2007. Data
were analyzed by SPSS version 13.
Results: A total of 1016 specimens were received. Fifty-one percent
specimens came from females and 49 % from males. The median age was
22 years. Fifty-six percent specimens showed acute appendicitis, 27 %
were normal appendices, 6 % had fecolith and 4 % showed oxyuriasis. In
total, 26.8% patients had normal appendix with 18.4% males and 34.6%
females (p<0.001; OR 2.35).
Conclusion: Overall negative appendicectomy (NA) rate was 27% and was
significantly higher in females as compared to male patients. (Rawal Med J
