The region known as “Gilgit Baltistan” comprises of seven districts covering an area of about 28,000 square kilometers.Previously, seven districts of Gilgit Baltistan (Gilgit, Diamer, Astor, Baltistan, Ghizr, Hunza Nagar and Ganchey), along with Chitral and Indus Kohistan were collectively known as Dardistan. There was a time when Gilgit, Baltistan and their suburbs were known as Bolor as well. Other nam es given to the area include 'Dardisa' or sout etimes 'th e Land of Shinaki'for the reason that “Shina” was the most common language spoken in these areas.To the left of the Indus river, ’Chilas' a Tehsil of Diamer is located wh ich prev ions1y used to be a sub-division of Gilgit. The passes of Goharabad, Khiner Nala, Hoder Nala, Darel Valley and Tangir Valley are located in Diamer on the right side of the Indus. The left side of the Indus comprises of the valleys of Raikol, Buner, Niat, Thak, Gichi and Thor. In the past, these areas on the left and right sides of the Indus river used to be ncient Kots. Tribes in each of these areas, within their geographical boundaries, possessed the tatus of a democratic state. The countries located on the frontiers of these valleys are linked to these valleys through fascinating mountains, passes and pathways. Little attention has been given to these pathways. Local as well as foreign writers have been quite silent particularly about the District Diamer.Specific objectives of the present research is to highlight various historical phases of District Diamer include.“Shina” the local language is not customary in writing, and majority of the population is also illiterate, yet they posse›.› ed social education
